Luzira Church and Lira

We arrived late last night into Entebbe after 30 hours of traveling. Thankfully our flights and connections went smoothly, all our bags arrived and Alex Mutagubya was there to meet us at the airport and take us to Adonai One, the guesthouse we stayed at in Kampala.

Today was more then busy. We met Alex at 8:00am and drove to a part of Kampala called Luzira which is where Alex’s church is located. The population of Luzira lives in stark contrast each day –  the wealthiest people in the country living in mansions up on the hill tops while the poorest of the poor live in the valleys referred to as slums. 30% of Luzira is considered to be living in poverty, 30% is the middle class, leaving 40% the wealthy upper class. Presently the church is doing well in the lowest classes of society, people are eager to learn and are searching. But within the upper class very few attend church – not because they are resistant – but as Alex put it, it is very difficult for a person who is educated, high ranking, educated and informed to go to a place where the bathrooms are so dirty that most wouldn’t want their own children going there. Alex’s mission is to relocate his church and create facilities that make church accessible to all classes. He sees the need for Christ’s love to reach not only the poor, but also the rich. And he is trusting God to make this vision a reality.

This is the new plot of land Alex is now renting and developing for the new church site. The location is strategic as it's a good meeting place for both the wealthy and the poor.

After spending half the day visiting Luzira and learning from Alex, the team and I, along with our faithful driver Christopher, began the 5 hour (rather bumpy) journey to Lira. The drive was pretty uneventful, in a good way, and we arrived around 6:30pm tonight.

We’re staying at a place called Kaberra just a few blocks from Otino Waa’s offices and in town café. Tomorrow we will go to church, have lunch with the houses of kids we’re assigned to, then attend the dedication of the new medical center.

For now we are doing well, healthy, well fed and sleepy J Looking forward to seeing the kids and mamas at Otino Waa again, I’m sure they’ve already grown up so much since I saw them last.
