This Is Africa

Sunday, May 1, 2011
Nothing reminds me that I’m in Africa as much as the scent – the exotic perfume of flowers, cooking charcoal, fuel, smoke, sweat, dust and green hang heavily in the thick, tropical air. As we drove up to Lira I remembered a few of the sights from my first trip to Gulu. It felt like forever since I’d been here, but now that I’m back it seems like not so much time has passed. Bikes, bodas, and large trucks fly down the bumpy roads lined with women in a hundred colors, children and water cans, cows and goats.

A huge storm rolled in during our dinner last night. Thunder, sheets of rain and lightning cooled the day’s heat and filled our ears with the dripping of water throughout the evening. I fell asleep to the sound of dogs howling and woke to the voices of church goers singing to radios at 5am. Yes, this is Africa.
